Burlington Vermont can now add one more accomplishment to its earth-friendly efforts: It is the only U.S. city with 100% of its electricity now coming from renewable resources! Earlier this month, the Burlington Electric Department announced its completed purchase of neighboring Winooski's One Hydroelectric Facility located on the banks of the Winooski River. Burlington now sources 100% of its electricity needs from renewable resources through a mix of outright ownership and contractual relationships with various energy producing facilities. This is an example of why I love this city. It is always finding new ways to safeguard its natural beauty for current and future generations. The 'Green movement' has a strong history in this state and Burlington continues to lead the way in earth-friendly practices & goals. Statewide, the goal is to produce 90% of its energy requirements from renewable resources by the year 2050!
